Maplewood Elementary School Reviews

I have three children, two of which have been at Maplewood for 2 years, and one who will start full-day kindergarten there this year. We love Maplewood. There is a strong sense of community and awareness of individual kids and their personalities at this school. The principal is warm and very good at finding grants and other ways of filling the gaps left by the standard budgets for Portland area schools. He also is a fabulous role model for the kids, in terms of how to treat others with respect and also by encouraging physical fitness and activity. The teachers we've had have been wonderful - each with particular gifts that have inspired and guided my kids. I'm very happy to have landed in this neighborhood and found this school. It's a gem, and we're going to stay here for the duration of my kids' elementary years.

The school is focused on whole child development and was recently upgraded to an A rating. The principal is outstanding and has a great staff. We have a daughter in second grade who loves her school. She also loves the afterschool program called art4life.

We have been very happy with our child's experience at Maplewood. The principle is fabulous and the staff is wonderful. The two teachers we've had have been excellent, caring and exceptional! Parental involvement is high, and the community seems very invested. Kids seem cared for, happy and engaged. We're Maplewood fans!

The academics at Maplewood seem fine, typical to most Portland Public Schools. While there aren't a lot of extracurricular activities at Maplewood, it's a vibrant school with lots of energy. Our two years there have been good ones. It has a small town feel. Our child is very happy there, has had wonderful capable teachers and feels part of the community. Hopefully it will prove to be a school where they can grow academically and socially. We are impressed with their thoughtful Principal and helpful upbeat staff. The Community is a nice and accepting one. You can be who you'd like to be at this school. The only negative is that there seems to be a 'core' group of parents who run things and it seems a little insular. They do a good job, but it isn't very inviting. Overall we really like Maplewood!

Maplewood is a wonderful K-5 public school. After touring the school and meeting some of the staff we left our daughters private school for Maplewood. We have been impressed with the overall operations of the school and the strong parent teacher collaborations. This year class sizes range from 21 to 28. The PTA fosters a strong sense of community and supports a host of activities that enriches every students educational experience.

Principal is excellent. Classes are larger than I would like this year, as a neighboring school closed last year and we got part of their students. Overall teachers are very experience. Most a good/excellent.
